Rev. SCOTT H. BOLLINGER
Pastor Scott joined Mt. Zion as senior pastor in May 2012, having previously served as senior interim pastor for 18 months and part-time interim associate pastor for two years. Prior to Mt. Zion, Pastor Scott was pastor of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Claremont, NC (1998-2007), and Beth Eden Lutheran Church in Newton, NC (1993-1998).
Pastor Scott is a graduate of Appalachian State University in Boone, NC (1980), and Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, SC (1993). He is married to Cynda Bollinger, an insurance agent for Catawba Valley Insurance Agency in Hickory, NC. They have a son, Riley, and daughter, Grace.
REv. Robert H. Shoffner
Part-time Assisting Pastor
Pastor Bob joined Mt. Zion in March 2012, having retired in February 2011 following 37 years of active ordained ministry. The 20 years immediately prior to retirement were spent as senior pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Hickory, NC. His first three ministries were as assistant pastor at Holy Trinity (1974-78), assistant to NC Synod LCA president Rev. Dr. Ernest Misenheimer (1978-82), and assistant to president Rev. Dr. H. George Anderson at Luther College, Decorah, IA (1982-91).
Pastor Bob is a 1967 graduate of UNC-CH, a Returned Peace Corps member (Malawi, 1967-69), and a 1974 graduate of Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, SC. He is married to Beth Shoffner, retired librarian/media specialist at Oakwood Elementary School. They have two
adult daughters, Adrienne and Lauren.
Organist & Administrative Assistant
A native of Hickory, NC, Tim Warren has served as Mt. Zion's organist since July 1978 and also works as the church's office administrator.
Tim received his organ
instruction at Lenoir-Rhyne University under Larry Lowder and was on staff at LRU for 12 years, serving for eight years as rehearsal accompanist and organist for the University Choir. He was also rehearsal accompanist and organist for the Catawba Valley Community Chorus for 15 years.
Tim has played many fine organs in the US, including those at Washington National Cathedral and the Basilica of the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.
Alice Robson leads the liturgical choir and the handbell choir at Mt. Zion. She has also served as a high school choral director for 27 years, notably at South Caldwell High School, where she retired in 2017 after 22 years.
Alice holds a BA from Appalachian State University in piano performance, choral conducting, and music education. She has been involved in the music programs of several local Lutheran churches during the last 25 years, including at Beth Eden and Bethany.
Director of Youth & Technology
A student at Lenoir-Rhyne University, Riley Bollinger coordinates activities for Mt. Zion's children and youth. He also manages the church's social media efforts. He has served as a camp counselor for many seasons and hopes to pursue a career in the field of Christian education.
