LRU Speakers Series: Bishop Elizabeth Eaton
Location: Grace Chapel on Lenoir-Rhyne University Campus.
The Rev. Elizabeth Eaton is the first female Presiding Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. She was elected as ELCA’s fourth presiding bishop at the 2013 ELCA Churchwide Assembly. Eaton earned a master’s degree from Harvard Divinity School and a bachelor of music education from the College of Wooster. She was ordained in 1981 and served as pastor to three congregations in Ohio before being elected bishop of the ELCA Northeastern Ohio Synod in 2006 and re-elected in May 2013.
LRU Speakers Series: Marlon F. Hall
Location: Grace Chapel on Lenoir-Rhyne University Campus.
Marlon F. Hall is a lecturing anthropologist and storyteller who uses film, art-installations, salon dinner parties, and yoga to unearth beauty from brokenness. He is the director for Folklore Films, serves on the faculty of Leadership Education at Duke Divinity’s Foundations of Christian Leadership program, and is a yoga teacher at Big Power Yoga. His life intention is to cultivate human potential in ways that are whimsically beautiful and positively willful.
NC WELCA Theological Seminar
The NC Women of the ELCA is offering a Fall Theological Seminar from November 2-4, 2018, at the Blowing Rock Conference Center. The Bible Study, “Living Worry Free” based on Matthew 6:31, will be presented by Rev. Jenni Zima. Please see Cindy Whisenant or the WELCA bulletin board for registration forms. LRU Speakers Series: Dr. Susan M. Glisson

Dr. Susan M. Glisson is co-founder and partner of Sustainable Equity, LLC. A native of Evans, Georgia, Glisson earned bachelor’s degrees in religion and history from Mercer University, a master’s degree in southern studies from the University of Mississippi, and a doctorate in American studies from the College of William and Mary. Her focus is social justice and she has been working to change conditions that have created a legacy of inequities for more than 20 years.

LRU Speakers Series: Rev. Daniel M. Bell, Jr.

The Rev. Dr. Daniel M. Bell Jr. is an independent scholar who served for almost two decades as a professor of theology and ethics at LR’s Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary. He is a popular speaker at colleges and universities, campus ministries, and churches on topics such as war and peace, the moral life, stewardship and economics, leadership, and mission of the church.
Bell is the author of several books, including Liberation Theology After the End of History (2001), Just War as Christian Discipleship (2009), The Economy of Desire: Christianity and Capitalism in a Postmodern World (2012), and most recently Divinations: Theopolitics in an Age of Terror (2017). He has also presented papers before various distinguished organizations and his work has appeared in various journals.
A gifted scholar and an enthusiastic teacher, Bell has been active in Habitat for Humanity and prison ministry, has led study seminars to Mexico, and regularly took students on cross-cultural immersion trips to Honduras and Haiti. He worked for years with active duty military chaplains in their advance civilian education program and served for several years as the General Hugh Shelton Distinguished Visiting Professor of Ethics at the U.S. Army’s Command and General Staff College, Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. He is an ordained Elder in the United Methodist Church. A graduate of Stetson University in Florida, he earned a Master of Divinity degree from Duke Divinity School and a doctorate in theology and ethics from Duke University.
Before his seminary teaching, Bell taught at Monmouth College, Truman State University, and Meredith College. He currently resides in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Established in 2018, the LR Living Well Center for Vocation and Purpose strives to engage students, faculty, and staff in the ongoing discernment of vocation and purpose. The Living Well Center for Vocation and Purpose hosts the speaker series: Lives Worth Living. Speakers, including theologians, bishops, artists, and advocates for justice, will share their vocational stories and encourage participants to think in new ways about what makes one’s own life meaningful and purpose-filled.
